vs

Terling Cricket Club won by 82 runs

Recap

Home to Rayleigh II

The season was back and the whites had been dusted off for the 2019 season, Big Time Bazza was in the side with his shiny new customised boots! Terling welcomed Rayleigh II whom were relegated from Div 1 last year.

Chief Keith lost the toss and Terling were sent in to bat, due to the return of Krish Govender, Adam Wilding was placed lower down the order, much to his dismay, Govender and O Dawson opened the batting and got off to a flyer, both freeing the wrists and playing some shots! Terling were quickly on the front foot with the scoreboard ticking along nicely. Krish was first to fall on 48 after a leading edge went straight back to the bowler, I think it was more jug avoidance than anything! In came Alex Taylor, and then off went Alex Taylor scoring just 1, failing to get off to a good start and follow in the form of last season. Marti Cullum was in next and was presented with 3 full tosses which he failed to dispatch and ended up being bowled round the legs. Owen Dawson then fell for a very well played 26, Big Time Bazza was at the crease and it’s a good job he was in form! Sending the left arm slow bowler all around Terling, especially the leg side boundary. The downpour of rain meant that the game was reduced to 38 overs so Terling needed to put some runs on the board quickly, Chief Keith and Big Woolf were setting terling up for a good finish. That changed when Big Bazza departed for a superb and quick fire 32, Adam Wilding was next in and with not many overs left the run rate started to slow down, Chief was ticking it over at the other end and with Wilding to fall next, Big man John Marshall was next to the wicket, he didn’t hang around and hit 2 leg side 4s quickly before being bowled, Humphries to the crease passing a late fitness held his bat at one end for 4 balls, Keith was bowled by the left hander, Atkinson in next and played a beautiful shot the point boundary for 4 runs, followed by a quick single putting Humphries on strike to run another quick single. Atkinson faces the last bowl and the pair ran a one, 166 off the 38 overs and the innings was at a close.

Tea was up and oh my daysssss if the Teas carry on like this for the rest of the season there will be some serious boot camp fitness sessions required for end of season, brownie was on offer aswell as Lucy’s delicious crispy cakes, they are a winner all round! Amelia kindly made the club a cake which went down a treat (see pictures on Facebook). Liam Humphries took arguably the biggest piece of cake one man could ever eat – so much that he had to put some aside to finish after he’d fielded!

Terling went out to field and Big Time Bazzas new spikes saw some action with him opening down the hill, Johnny Boy Marshall up the hill. It wasn’t long before the wickets came. First opener gone caught behind off T Woolf, the second was caught behind off Marshall. Yes you’ve read it right, Grandad held two catches – in fact he didn’t drop anything – and continues to use any part of his body to stop the ball getting past him. Ben Foakes should be concerned.

Terling took wickets on a consistent basis without the Rayleigh batsmen really troubling the scoring, T Woolf’s slower ball was out of this world, potentially earning him an England call up just in time for the World Cup. Woolf’s slower ball then claimed two quick wickets both coming in half a mile and hitting middle stump! John Marshall was consistent at the other end keeping the scoring down and also take another wicket. Tris Woolf then wrapped up his 5fer with another slower ball that came in half a mile, 9 overs bowled and 5 wickets taken, 3 slower balls all bowled, Birdy and Humphries taking catches for the other two. That was enough for Bazza as he strode off the pitch without paying his match fee, proudly proclaiming he was obviously a shoe in for man of the match – and most likely to receive a call to sort the Brexit debacle up.

The scoreboard wasn’t getting updated regularly much to the disgust of the Terling fielders, as the chap who was manning the score book had disappeared into the horses filed to watch the game.

All Terling knew is that they were on their way to a very convincing win to start the season, Even Big Time Owen Dawson chipped in with two wickets to wrap the game up! Rayleigh were skittled for 84.

A fantastic day was had by all, the players and the fans that came to support their club! We had a happy chairman! 100% record to start the season and the promotion push!

Thank you for listening, I’ve been your reporter for the day and will be back next week when we travel up to visit High Roding, one of the favourites for promotion this season – what a game we have in store for you!
